Description

Celebrate the 4th of July with these festive Crinkle Cookies featuring red, white, and blue colors. Soft and chewy on the inside with a crackly powdered sugar coating, these cookies are perfect for holiday gatherings and patriotic celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Red and blue food coloring

Coating

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Add in the eggs and mix thoroughly to combine all wet ingredients.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients and Chill Dough: Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually fold these dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined to form a dough. Cover and chill the dough for at least one hour to firm up.
  3. Preheat and Color Dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Divide the chilled dough into three equal portions. Use red food coloring to color one portion and blue food coloring to color another, leaving the third portion plain to represent white.
  4. Form Cookie Balls: Combine small amounts of each colored dough by loosely mixing red, blue, and plain dough together before rolling them into balls. Roll each ball generously in powdered sugar to create the distinctive crinkle effect. Place them spaced apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake Cookies: Bake the cookies for 12 to 14 minutes until the tops are crackly but the centers remain soft. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets briefly before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough is crucial to help the colors remain distinct and to make rolling easier.
  • Be careful not to overmix colored dough portions, or colors may blend too much.
  • Use parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • These cookies freeze well; freeze dough balls before baking for up to 1 month.
