Description

This homemade stuffing recipe combines sage and onion stuffing cubes with sautéed apples, celery, and onions for a flavorful and moist side dish. Enhanced with traditional herbs like sage and poultry seasoning, it’s the perfect complement to your holiday meals or any cozy dinner. The stuffing is baked to golden perfection, creating a crispy top with a soft, savory interior.

Ingredients

Scale

Stuffing Base

  • 12 oz Sage and Onion Stuffing Cubes
  • 2-3 cups chicken broth

Vegetables and Fruit

  • 2 apples, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced

Seasonings and Fat

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1-2 tablespoons sage
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Set this aside as you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Sauté Vegetables and Apples: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, celery, and onion, cooking for about 10 minutes until the onions become soft and translucent, and the mixture is fragrant.
  3. Combine Bread Cubes and Vegetables: Place the sage and onion stuffing cubes in a large mixing bowl. Add the cooked apple and vegetable mixture, tossing thoroughly to coat the bread evenly.
  4. Season the Mixture: Sprinkle in 1 to 2 tablespoons of sage and 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning, along with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine all the flavors.
  5. Add Broth to Moisten: Slowly add 2 to 3 cups of chicken broth, stirring as you go, until the bread cubes are moistened but not soggy. The mixture should hold together without being overly wet.
  6. Bake the Stuffing: Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the top reaches your desired level of golden brown and crispiness.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth for a vegetarian variation.
  • Adjust the amount of broth depending on how moist you prefer your stuffing.
  • Adding chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts can add extra texture.
  • Leftover stuffing can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven to retain the crispy texture.
