Using day-old rice and a rich blend of seasonings, this skillet meal is perfect for a satisfying family dinner that delivers a perfect balance of spice, texture, and bold coastal flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Proteins

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • 12 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1.5 cups mixed onions and bell peppers, finely chopped
  • 3 tsp minced garlic

Dry Ingredients & Seasonings

  • 0.25 cups plain flour
  • 1 tsp seafood seasoning
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

Liquids & Oils

  • 4 cups cooked white rice (preferably day-old)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided

Instructions

  1. Season the Shrimp: Toss the peeled and deveined shrimp with seafood seasoning until evenly coated to infuse them with coastal flavors.
  2. Cook the Shrimp: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook shrimp for 2 to 3 minutes per side until they turn opaque and curl into a C-shape, then remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Meat: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the ground beef and pork sausage, cooking and stirring until the meats begin to brown and release their flavors.
  4. Add Vegetables and Garlic: Stir in the chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic with the browned meats. Cook the mixture until the vegetables soften and become fragrant.
  5. Incorporate Seasonings and Flour: Sprinkle the dried oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and plain flour over the meat and vegetable mixture. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings and to begin thickening the base.
  6. Add Chicken Broth and Simmer: Pour in the chicken broth while scraping up any browned bits from the pan to enhance depth. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Mix in Rice: Fold in the cooked white rice thoroughly. Continue simmering for another 5 minutes to allow the rice to absorb flavors and heat through completely.
  8. Return Shrimp to Skillet: Add the seared shrimp back into the skillet and gently mix them through the rice mixture. Adjust seasoning to taste with additional salt or pepper if needed.
  9. Serve Hot: Once everything is warmed through and combined, serve the savory shrimp dirty rice immediately for a satisfying meal full of bold flavors.

Notes

  • Use day-old cooked rice for the best texture; fresh rice may become mushy.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper and chili powder to your preferred spice level.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute plain flour with a gluten-free thickener.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator and reheat thoroughly before serving.
  • This dish can be doubled to accommodate larger gatherings.
